AI-powered search is no longer a future trend. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok are answering millions of queries every day, and the businesses they recommend in those answers are getting traffic that used to come from Google. If you are still not sure what AI visibility is, how it works, or what you should be doing about it, this FAQ covers the questions we hear most often.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is the measure of whether AI-powered search engines can find, understand, and recommend your business when someone asks a relevant question. It is not the same as SEO. A business can rank on the first page of Google and still be completely invisible to ChatGPT and Perplexity.
When a user asks an AI assistant "What is the best recruitment agency in Manchester?" or "Which Shopify store sells handmade candles?", the AI runs a web search, reads the pages it finds, and generates a written answer. Your business either appears in that answer or it does not. AI visibility is about making sure you appear.
Why does AI visibility matter now?
Because user behaviour is shifting. According to Gartner's forecast, traditional search engine volume is expected to drop 25% by 2026 as users move to AI-powered alternatives. That does not mean Google is disappearing. It means a growing segment of your potential customers are asking AI engines instead of typing into Google.
If your business is not structured for AI comprehension, those customers will never find you through that channel. Your competitors who are optimised will get the recommendation instead.
How is AI visibility different from SEO?
SEO optimises your website for Google's ranking algorithm. It focuses on backlinks, keyword targeting, page authority, and technical factors that determine where your site appears in a list of search results. The user clicks through to your site.
AI visibility optimises your website for AI engines that generate answers. These engines read your pages, extract information, and cite your business directly in a written response. The user may never click through to your site — but they see your name, your description, and often a recommendation to use you. The factors that influence AI visibility overlap with SEO in some areas (quality content, technical health) but diverge significantly in others (schema markup, AI crawler access, conversational content structure). We wrote a detailed comparison in our post on AI visibility vs SEO.
What is schema markup and why does it matter?
Schema markup is machine-readable structured data that you add to your website's HTML. It uses the Schema.org vocabulary and is typically implemented as JSON-LD (a script tag in your page's head). It tells search engines and AI systems exactly what your business is, what you offer, where you are located, what your customers say about you, and more.
For traditional Google search, schema markup earns you rich results (star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, product cards). For AI search, it is far more important. AI engines rely heavily on structured data to understand your business accurately. Without schema, the AI has to infer everything from unstructured text, and inference is unreliable. With schema, the AI gets clean, structured facts it can cite with confidence.
The most important schema types for AI visibility are Organisation (or LocalBusiness), Product, Service, FAQPage, and Review. Our complete guide to schema markup covers implementation in detail.
What are AI crawlers and should I allow them?
AI crawlers are web bots sent by AI companies to read and index your website content. The major ones are GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, GoogleOther (Google, used for Gemini), and Bytespider (ByteDance). They are configured through your robots.txt file.
If your robots.txt blocks these bots, the AI engines they serve literally cannot read your content. No amount of schema markup or content quality will help if the AI cannot access your pages. Many websites unintentionally block AI crawlers through overly restrictive robots.txt rules.
Our recommendation is to allow all major AI crawlers unless you have a specific legal or commercial reason to block them. For most businesses, the upside of being recommended by AI engines far outweighs any concerns about content use.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. It is the practice of optimising your website specifically for AI-powered search engines that generate answers rather than ranking links. GEO covers the same territory as AI visibility but frames it as an active discipline, similar to how SEO is the practice of optimising for Google.
A GEO strategy typically involves implementing comprehensive schema markup, ensuring AI crawler access, structuring content for AI comprehension, building verifiable trust signals (reviews, citations, author credentials), and maintaining content freshness. Our post on GEO vs SEO covers the full picture.
How do I check my AI visibility score?
The quickest way is to run a free audit on FlinnSchema. It analyses your website across 26 factors that influence AI visibility and gives you a percentage score in under 60 seconds. The factors are weighted by how much each one actually impacts whether AI engines recommend your business.
A score above 60% means your site is well-structured for AI comprehension. Between 30% and 60% means there are significant gaps. Below 30% means your business is effectively invisible to AI search engines.
What factors does an AI visibility audit check?
FlinnSchema's audit checks 26 factors grouped by impact level:
- High impact: Schema markup presence and completeness, E-E-A-T signals, LLM readability, reviews and trust signals, AI crawler access, FAQ schema, conversational content, and LLMs.txt file
- Standard impact: Reddit presence, content freshness, social profiles, content depth, robots.txt configuration, sitemap
- Lower impact: Internal linking, image SEO, semantic HTML, meta tags, Open Graph, heading structure, page performance, HTML quality, HTTPS, mobile viewport
Each factor is scored individually and then weighted by its impact multiplier. The final score is capped at 90% because no automated audit can capture every nuance of AI engine behaviour.
Can I test whether AI engines actually mention my business?
Yes. FlinnSchema Premium includes LLM prompt testing, which sends real search prompts to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok with web search enabled and checks whether your business is mentioned in the response. It categorises mentions as direct (named recommendation), indirect (mentioned but not as a primary recommendation), or not found.
Each result is verified by an AI classifier to filter out false positives (cases where the AI echoes your business name without genuinely recommending it). You get 4 tests per billing period with additional tests available as top-ups. The results are a real-time snapshot of your AI visibility across all four major engines.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Some factors produce results quickly. Adding schema markup, opening up AI crawler access, and publishing an LLMs.txt file are changes that AI engines can pick up within days of their next crawl. These are the highest-impact factors and often the quickest to implement.
Other factors take longer. Building reviews on Trustpilot and Google, earning citations on authoritative sites, and developing comprehensive FAQ content are ongoing efforts. A realistic timeline for meaningful improvement is 2 to 8 weeks for the quick wins, with continued progress over 3 to 6 months as trust signals accumulate.
Is AI visibility only relevant for e-commerce?
No. AI visibility matters for any business that potential customers might search for using AI. This includes service businesses, agencies, consultancies, SaaS companies, local businesses, professional practices, and e-commerce brands. If someone could conceivably ask an AI assistant a question that your business should answer, AI visibility is relevant to you.
Some of our highest-impact results have been with recruitment agencies, professional services firms, and B2B SaaS companies, not just online stores.
Where do I start?
Start with data. Run a free AI visibility audit to see where your site stands right now. The audit takes under 60 seconds and gives you a clear score with a breakdown of what is working and what is not. From there, the Premium subscription unlocks detailed recommendations, LLM prompt testing, competitor comparison, and a prioritised implementation roadmap.
